Mosaic Church starts demo

Demolition is set for this week on a long-closed, Winter Garden department store that will be rebuilt as Mosaic Community Church’s main campus.

Now located off the West Orange Trail in Oakland, the church purchased a building with 78,000 square feet that is part of a shopping center on Colonial Drive and South Park Avenue. The price was about $4 million.

Plans call for a 1,200-seat auditorium to accommodate about 2,500 weekly attendees over several services, said Phil Taylor, executive pastor for the church. The new site will also have a lobby about four times larger than the existing one, room for children’s classes and a coffee bar. Completion is expected in Summer 2017.

The existing Mosaic property, which includes about 4.5 acres, is being marketed by Matt Messier, church and nonprofit specialist at Foundry Commercial. So far, Taylor said, both churches and developers have shown interest in it.

Bradley Bowen Construction Company of Jacksonville is the general contractor and Hyde Park Architects of Tampa is doing the design. Plain Joe is integrating the lobby into the design.
